Brightlands
Brightlands is a dynamic and innovative ecosystem in Limburg, where companies, knowledge institutions and startups collaborate on ground-breaking technologies and sustainable solutions. It is a place where science and business meet and where ideas are transformed into specific projects. Always with an eye for what has social value and can also be commercially interesting.
The areas of expertise within Brightlands are:
- Healthy and sustainable food, future farming and biocircular economy (Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo)
- Circular materials, biomedical innovations and sustainable processes (Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Sittard-Geleen)
- Valorization and financing (Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus)
- Artificial intelligence, data science and smart digital services (Brightlands Smart Services Campus in Heerlen)

Limburg Centraal
Limburg Centraal includes the development of large-scale housing locations, led by the Province of Limburg and the municipalities of Heerlen, Maastricht, Roermond, Sittard-Geleen, Weert and Venlo. These are locations that are easily accessible by public transport and are intended for housing seekers from Limburg and beyond.
Within a 1.5-kilometer circle (15-minute walk) near the six train stations in the aforementioned cities, more than 30,000 housing units can be built by 2040. This will give a boost not only to housing construction, but also to the economic development of Limburg and the quality of life in its immediate surroundings. Limburg offers room for growth, which provides opportunities for Limburg cities in terms of economy, facilities and livability.

But Limburg Centraal is about more than housing. It shows how we want to shape our urbanization in a sustainable way: integrated; living, working and life and a Limburg that is well connected to its surroundings. Here, the presence of the Brightlands campuses is an important stimulus for the attractiveness of the Province.
Einstein Telescope
The Einstein Telescope will be Europe's most advanced observatory for gravitational waves. Gravitational waves contain valuable information about the most extreme events in the universe: from the nature of black holes to the first moments after the Big Bang. The observatory is therefore of great importance for international physics and astronomy.
The three 10-kilometre tunnels of the Einstein Telescope will be 250 to 300 metres underground to make undisturbed measurements of gravitational waves. The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany are jointly studying whether to host this world-class observatory in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion (EMR). Their border area is a promising location for the Einstein Telescope, thanks to its unique soil that dampens disturbing vibrations. Good connections and the network of knowledge institutions and companies also make the area attractive.
The results of our joint study will be presented in a bidbook. The Council of Representatives (11 European countries) is expected to decide on the final location of the Einstein Telescope in Europe in 2026, based on the bidbooks received from the potential sites.
